Coaching Model: M.O.V.E.

2019/06/11

A Coaching Model Created by Mihoko Kobayashi
(Leadership Coach, JAPAN)

It is my client who sits in the driving seat of life.

I, as a coach, help my client to MOVE from where s/he stands now to where s/he wishes to be.

Leadership Coaching Model Mihoko Kobayashi 1

Step1 M: Meaning of the coaching objective

In Step1, the client explores the Meaning of the objective in coaching sessions. Be it career goal, be it personal life dream, it is essential for the client and me as a coach to understand the importance of the objective.

Supporting coaching competencies:

  • Competency 2: Creating a coaching agreement

Supporting questions:

  • Why do you want to achieve that objective?
  • What makes the objective that important for you?
  • How would you feel when the objective is achieved?

STEP2 O: Observe the client & let the client observe her/himself

In Step 2, I observe the client how s/he sees her/himself and what are perspectives, what are underlying beliefs. And more importantly, I invite the client to observe her/himself through the dialogue.

Supporting coaching competencies:

  • Competency 3: Creating trust & Intimacy through acknowledgment & appreciation
  • Competency 4: Coaching Presence
  • Competency 5: Active listening
  • Competency 6: Powerful questioning
  • Competency 7: Direct Communication through observation, feedback and intuition

STEP3 V: Value that the client put importance on for her/his life

In Step 3, I help the client to find her/his value that s/he put importance on. Even if the objective is the same, every client should have her/his own value why s/he wants to achieve that objective. Coaching focus on the client as a person, not on the situation, so it is critical to be aware of the value. And it is important for the client to know her/his value to have the most meaningful outcome from the coaching sessions.

Supporting coaching competencies:

  • Competency 8: Creating awareness

Supporting coaching tools:

  • Value Matrix
  • Wheel of Life
  • Strength Finder

STEP4 E: Empower the client for actions

In Step 4, I empower the client for actions toward the objective achievement based on the created self-awareness and her/his value

Supporting coaching competencies:

  • Competency 9: Designing actions
  • Competency 10: Planning and goal setting
  • Competency 11: Managing progress and accountability

Supporting coaching tools:

  • Action plan setting with time frame
  • Creating a structure to help the client to keep committed
  • Visualization
  • Keeping accountability in the following session

Life is a journey. If we stay, we see the same view.

Move on, and then only we will discover a new view.
