A Coaching Model Created by Carol Mui Cheng Koh
(Career Coach, SINGAPORE)

This coaching model is developed as a step-stool for those who want to achieve success in times of stress and uncertainty.

What is Success?

Success is getting what you want. – Dale Carnegie

What is Stress?

Stress is not what happens to us. It is our response to what happens. And response is something we can choose. – Maureen Killoran, Life Coach  27

It is possible to achieve success in stressful and uncertain times when we respond to situations by choosing the best solution and taking the right actions to achieve our goals. A goal without a plan is just a wish. The Hello model acts as a framework to guide the client from ‘wishing’ to ‘realizing’ it.

Coaching application

Coaching creates opportunities for clients to explore the possibilities to achieve success by identifying their strengths and using these to build a successful future. Exploration is a discovery process. It takes time to identify the real you and your goals and sometimes, your views and goals may change over time as you go deeper into the discovery journey.

Regardless of the presence or absence of stress, certain or uncertain times, every coachee can work towards success and achieve it with the help of a well-designed action plan and commitment. Taking ownership of the co-created action plan would propel you to greater heights and accomplish more. As a result, you could achieve more success and enhance the quality of your life. Your coach is here to support you with resources and creative ideas and skills.

Here am I

Here, at the start of the first session, I (the coach) will make known to you (the coachee) our coaching agreement. Specified in this agreement are information on the coaching process and partnership of trust. This includes the confidentiality clause, duration and number of coaching sessions, mode of communication and more about the coaching partnership.

Coaching is all about you (the coachee). You select the topic for discussion at the beginning of each session. I believe that you have the answers to the issues brought up and I am here to walk the journey of discovery with you to reach your goals. As the coaching continues, you may find yourself migrating to another issue. This could be the real issue at heart and I will go along with the flow. Essentially, every coaching session is about you.

Time will be set aside to create self-awareness. This is the foundation of personal growth and success. It is a process where a person is able to evaluate sources of information accurately and channel them to achieve the goals that are set. Self-awareness helps a person:

  • To redirect negative thoughts and emphasize positive ones
  • Behave positively instead of creating obstacles
  • Act consciously instead of reacting to people and events
  • Genuinely appreciate oneself

In each coaching session, you will be able to talk to your coach about your current situation in an open and safe environment in full confidentiality and complete trust.

You set your goal/s and communicate with your coach in detail what this comprises and what you would like to achieve at the end of the session. To maximise the chance of success in achieving the goals, structures would be put in place to support them. Your coach will co-create with you a plan to achieve these goals with the help of the following acronym, SMART:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Reliable
  • Time-oriented

Energize

Everyone has a set of strengths and talents that are unique. Many times, people do not recognise the unique combination of their talents and strengths. Only upon doing assessments or discussions with people around them do they come to realize their ‘hidden’ strengths and talents. Discovering and maximising these would boost your confidence to achieve the SMART goals. Your coach is equipped with tools to help you discover your strengths and talents.  Some of the methods and tools to develop self-awareness are:

  1. Journal writing
  2. Listing your talents and strengths and asking family and friends to support and help you discover more about yourself
  3. Do the strengthsfinder survey

The added knowledge works as an energizer; it catapults you into a positive thinking mode and mental shift to achieve success.

Career Coaching Model Carol Mui Cheng Koh1People who are aware of their talents and strengths are more appreciative of their own uniqueness and capabilities. As a result, they could focus and invest their time and resources to articulate and develop their talents and strengths to achieve more in life.

Look out

Together with the coach, you will brainstorm and look out for as many options as you could. This brainstorming process would help you to explore alternative ideas and solutions so you could make a more informed decision. Your coach and you will both look into the possibility of executing these and discuss how each of these would help you to successfully achieve the SMART goals. You imagine and consider the outcomes and choose the best option. Your coach will guide as well as support your decision and journey.

Leap forward

Once you have decided, your coach will co-create an action plan with you. Now it is time to … focus and …. LEAP forward into action. It can be scary to leap high and far or travel off the beaten path. Fear will paralyse you, if you allow it to. Are you afraid to get hurt, to fall or to fail? Instead of pushing it away, you coach will help you to identify its root cause and put things in its right perspective. Wear your courageous hat and take your first step. Your coach is here to help, support and encourage you through the coaching process from the start; assessing your current situation, creating self-awareness, goal-setting, development to commitment to execution of the action plans till you touch the finish line.

Oic

Ownership, I can see it is possible! Once you start the act of getting into motion, the foundation for creating change is set. You can now feel your wish is turning into a plan and becoming reality!

I can imagine what it will be like when I reach my goal/s! because I am getting closer.

Completion upon taking action! Congratulations and celebrations!
