10 Rules for Self Management

2014/07/14

In coaching, as in life, self-management is the ability to set aside our personal opinions, the need to perform or look good and the need to be right. This involves a keen sense of self-awareness and then the ability to let go of these and reconnect to the client.

Summary

(0:07) The coach is relatively invisible yet present.
(0:11) Self-management for coaches
(0:13) Coaches must believe that client has the answers
(0:31) No advise from the coach
(0:50) Self-management is a lifestyle
(1:05) Values to live by
(1:09) Assertive is better than aggressive
(1:24) Trust is built by following through
(1:33) Self care is important
(1:43) Create momentum and energy
(1:49) What your habits say about you
(1:50) Treat others how you want to be treated
(2:02) Take action
(2:06) Learn and share with curiosity
(2:23) It is your choice

Self-management means managing your own beliefs, your judgements, your opinions, your reactions.

It starts with really believing that your client is creative and whole and has their own answers.  It stops you from giving your opinion or advise.

Coaches believe that the client has their own answers and so does not give advice or their own opinion. [Click to Tweet!]

So, how do we do this?  Well, in coaching it’s kind of a way of life. As a coach you self-manage in every area of your life, so when you’re coaching, it is a natural posture to have to be letting go of opinions, advise giving and judgements.

How To Improve You Self Management

Live by your values in everything that you do. [Click to Tweet!]

1) Live by your values in everything that you do.
2) Speak up in an assertive way, not in an aggressive way.
You don’t speak up because you know the person is going to give you the response or the outcome that you want. You speak up as a way of feeding your self-esteem and your confidence.
3) Keep your word. That’s how you build trust. Do what you say you’re going to do and don’t break a promise easily.
4) Take good care of yourself.
5) Develop good habits that harness your energy and build momentum.
6) Keep doing what you’re doing really well.  Take a look at what could you work a little bit on.
7) Be nice.  Treat people the way you would like to be treated.
8) Be action-oriented.
9) Be curious.  This can help you manage your life, manage your emotions and then of course, show up in a coaching relationship as an extraordinary coach.
10) Remember that you always have a choice. Choose and choose without regret. Don’t look back. You’re not going that way.
