How To Become a Parent Coach2-600x352For those thinking about becoming a parent coach, lets take a step back first and define what a parent coach is, what kind of people in what kind of professions make good parent coaches and then look at how to become a parent coach. So lets begin:

What is a parent coach?

A parent coach is someone who helps parents with parenting challenges by offering alternative perspectives around family situations, uncovering strategies to shift behaviour and family dynamics and helping parents achieve their parenting goals.

What is a youth coach?

A youth coach typically works with kids, teen, and young adults helping them to overcome the barriers or fears that may be keeping them and the rest of the world from seeing the brilliance what lay within.

Is parent or youth coaching for me?

Are you a parent, teacher, youth worker, sports coach, someone who already works with children and youth, and/or would really enjoy supporting young people achieve their dreams and goals?  Imagine how much more of a difference you could make in a young person’s life if you had coaching skills such as powerful questioning that changed a young person’s perspective and helped them succeed and achieve their goals.

If you are the person who:

  • Young people trust and seek out for support
  • Loves working with kids, teens, and/or young adults
  • Get pleasure out of finding the best in someone
  • Motivates and energizes those around you

then parent or youth coaching may be for you and International Coach Academy had a Parent and Youth coaching group to support you in your learning.

So if you are thinking, “Hey, I love working with parent and kids and I’ve been doing all my life!”, now is a great time to take your experience and gifts to the next level.

  • Be your own boss
  • Make your own schedule
  • Get paid for doing what you love best – help parent, children and youth

How to Become a Parent Coach

Step 1
The way to become a parent coach is to firstly do an accredited coach training course where you will learn the skills you need be become a coach and where you will get to practice your coaching skills.
Step 2
Join a community of other parent coaches to share coaching business building tips and challenges faced by other parent and youth coaches.
Step 3
Start coaching ! As part of your accredited coach training program you will be coached and coach fellow students. During your training you can also start coaching real clients and deciding whether to coach them for free to begin with or as paid clients.
Step 4
Build your network and find paying clients.  For parent and youth coaches this is relatively easy as parents can be found at schools, children’s activity centers, youth groups, etc. Offer to give a free talk to school parents on a topic of interest to them or leave flyers and business cards in places where parents would be and if you have children yourself, speak to the parents of your children’s friends, join the schools parent committee, volunteer for sports days, volunteer at your local church or youth group. Start with your own network of friends and acquaintances and grow your business from there.
Step 5
Once you have the required number of paid coaching hours, consider becoming an ICF credentialed coach.
