The Coach’s Role: Sense of Control vs. Sense of Community: When we take on the role of a coach, we have no control over our clients’ experiences or the results of our discussions. We create empowering, safe spaces for relationships, energy, and growth because that’s what community is about. It’s impossible to predict in full what will be discussed in a session or how a client will react. As our clients, the only thing we can control is how we respond right now. By collaborating with our clients to co-create a future path and a sense of community, we can invite exploration and respond to the challenge.

I’m fortunate to Interview with Dr. Doug Austrom, a lecturer at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and an active participant in The Mankind Project and The Socio-Technical Systems Roundtable, a coach, a collaborator, and a friend. He was born in Canada. Doug is passionate about empowering people to make life-giving decisions and finding joy in lifelong learning, and equity. An expert in organizational transformation, he has developed these concepts throughout his career to have a positive impact. Doug and I had a chance to talk so I could learn more about his thoughts on the intersection of community, coaching, and transformation.
