ICF Global Study Into Coaching (2020)

Coaching has roots from a variety of theories and philosophies including adult education, positive psychology and organisational psychology. And it can be found in an increasing number of industries and professions. It is not a singular practice. Consequently it cannot be taught as such.

At ICA, we like to plan your exit at the beginning.  You will graduate with the confidence, skills and knowledge needed to coach anyone anywhere in the world, your own unique coaching model and portfolio, and a coaching certification that is recognised globally.

We don't just teach - we specialise in the application of knowledge.

Just as coaching is all about making deep and sustainable changes, so our learning method is about deep and life long learning. We use an online classroom to give you as much"knowledge" as we can upfront - then we work with you on applying that knowledge to your specific situation.

At ICA the term online learning refers to an interactive e-learning methodology and a thriving community of networks and friendships. Created by the ICA founder Robyn Logan, back in 2001, ICA's online learnsite hosts all the required learning materials; module downloads, video tutorials, curated resources, class schedules and the ICA Coaches private forum.

The first thing you do when you join our training is spend some time looking around the virtual corridors of ICA - unpacking your learnsite, meeting your faculty, meeting your peers, and joining an orientation call. Then using your graduation checklist you map out a learning schedule that best suits your study goals (options to fast track or take your time).

Most of the students in our program have ongoing family or work commitments that influence the time they set aside for study. We totally  understand that and for this reason our programs are flexible and designed so that you create the study schedule that fits with your lifestyle. If you miss a class one week, you can take it another week at the same time. And, if you have to travel or relocate geographically, then you just jump to a class schedule that fits with the new time zone.

When coaching was a new profession, it was perfectly acceptable to simply call yourself a coach. But today the coaching profession is well developed across many industries and professions around the globe and the need to specialize and showcase your uniqueness is increasing.

So, although you will graduate with the skills to coach anyone, anywhere in the world, we also teach you how to specialise.  We will look at your background, how it intersects with coaching and how it can be blended with coaching and then ask you two specific questions;  who do you want to coach?, and how do you want to coach? From this you will create your own niche and coaching model, showcasing your unique strengths, skills and expertise to future employers or clients.

We are constantly grappling with change – changes we want to make happen, changes we have to make, and changes that are happening to us. FlipIt is based on the idea that the way we see our world is a choice. The same event can happen to two different people and they will respond in completely different ways.

The framework is a 4 step process (Find It, Feel It, Frame It, Flip It).  We teach this framework in all our classes (ACTP and ACSTH) and our Advanced Program coaches graduate with a 12 month FlipIt Facilitator license.  However, you don't have to be a coach to use this tool, with many individuals and workplaces integrating it into their work or life.  Read More

Transformational Coach, SWITZERLAND

testimonial-avatarThe journey is the reward, is a popular saying that perfectly fits with my experience at ICA. I valued every single class, lab, peer, and mentor coaching. Not only I learned very valuable lessons to take away in my new profession as a Coach, but also, I met wonderful people which I admire and respect. Looking back, I would do it all over again, despite being challenging at times to find the time, working full time during the day, and having a small family to look after. But the heart looks for ways to flourish its inner nature and when it does, nothing can stop it 🙂

Retirement Preparation Coach, SWITZERLAND

testimonial-avatarDear ICA Community, This has been such an amazing self-transformation and development journey, thank you so much. I've had a few memorable moments throughout the training, two of them which I wish to share: 1.) attending a class with Sunita Chhibar about 4 months into the training, I was going through a very challenging personal time (husband in intensive care, intense workload...) and Sunita said "this too shall pass Melanie", without knowing about the personal context. Spot on. And so helpful 2.) the observed coaching.... a great group of students and the most amazing expert, Lorna. The observed coaching sessions started at 10 pm CET time until midnight, and I remember looking at the full moon outside and listening to the peer coaching recordings and thinking that it was so interesting that I wasn't even tired, that's when I realized that I wanted to go further in my coaching journey and I had found a new passion. Thanks to everyone for their great insights and learnings.

testimonial-avatarThree things that are most memorable for me. Firstly, to see myself grow as a coach through sharpening my coaching presence, active listening skills, and in turn ask powerful questions about the situation. Secondly, it is about meeting people from different parts of the world who are as organized and driven as me - it is a strong validation and motivation to continue pursuing my life goals when I realized that other people are equal to or more accomplished than myself. It is also a great joy to be celebrating achievements - both personal and professional together. Finally, I also thoroughly enjoyed the peer coaching sessions as we supported and encouraged each other through the ICA journey - it has been a very intense learning curve, especially in losing assumptions, judgment, and bad habits and gaining proper coaching skills. The friendships that I have made through this learning process has been invaluable, and I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to expand my online network, especially in light of the impact of COVID-19 this year of 2020.
