Coach Training - North America

Students living in North America join our Global Coach Training Programs where they develop strong friendships or networks, and can share local and global perspectives on coaching issues and skills.

Coaching Trends In North America

72% of ICF Global coaching study respondents in North America viewed coaching as a profession vs 28% viewing coaching as a skill and 6% view coaching as an industry.

North American coaches use a mix of in-person coaching (51%), audio-video platforms (50%) and telephone (59%) which differs from other regions around the world which tend to have more face to face coaching. This trend may change after Covid.

Personal clients account for a smaller share of the client mix in North America (17%), Coach practitioners are more likely to have executive clients.

The typical coaching engagement lasts from four to six months. Longer engagements (seven months or more), are most often found in North America (44%)

On average, coaching sessions are shortest in North America, where 29% last less than one hour and fewer than one in five (19%) last more than one hour.

Clients are Looking for Certified Coaches

81% of coaches who responded to the ICF Global Coaching study 2020, strongly agreed or somewhat agreed that people they received coaching from needed to be certified or credentialed.

ICF Global Study Into Coaching (2020)

Coaching has roots from a variety of theories and philosophies including adult education, positive psychology and organisational psychology. And it can be found in an increasing number of industries and professions. It is not a singular practice. Consequently it cannot be taught as such.

At ICA, we like to plan your exit at the beginning.  You will graduate with the confidence, skills and knowledge needed to coach anyone anywhere in the world, your own unique coaching model and portfolio, and a coaching certification that is recognised globally.

We don't just teach - we specialise in the application of knowledge.

Just as coaching is all about making deep and sustainable changes, so our learning method is about deep and life long learning. We use an online classroom to give you as much"knowledge" as we can upfront - then we work with you on applying that knowledge to your specific situation.

At ICA the term online learning refers to an interactive e-learning methodology and a thriving community of networks and friendships. Created by the ICA founder Robyn Logan, back in 2001, ICA's online learnsite hosts all the required learning materials; module downloads, video tutorials, curated resources, class schedules and the ICA Coaches private forum.

The first thing you do when you join our training is spend some time looking around the virtual corridors of ICA - unpacking your learnsite, meeting your faculty, meeting your peers, and joining an orientation call. Then using your graduation checklist you map out a learning schedule that best suits your study goals (options to fast track or take your time).

Most of the students in our program have ongoing family or work commitments that influence the time they set aside for study. We totally  understand that and for this reason our programs are flexible and designed so that you create the study schedule that fits with your lifestyle. If you miss a class one week, you can take it another week at the same time. And, if you have to travel or relocate geographically, then you just jump to a class schedule that fits with the new time zone.

When coaching was a new profession, it was perfectly acceptable to simply call yourself a coach. But today the coaching profession is well developed across many industries and professions around the globe and the need to specialize and showcase your uniqueness is increasing.

So, although you will graduate with the skills to coach anyone, anywhere in the world, we also teach you how to specialise.  We will look at your background, how it intersects with coaching and how it can be blended with coaching and then ask you two specific questions;  who do you want to coach?, and how do you want to coach? From this you will create your own niche and coaching model, showcasing your unique strengths, skills and expertise to future employers or clients.

We are constantly grappling with change – changes we want to make happen, changes we have to make, and changes that are happening to us. FlipIt is based on the idea that the way we see our world is a choice. The same event can happen to two different people and they will respond in completely different ways.

The framework is a 4 step process (Find It, Feel It, Frame It, Flip It).  We teach this framework in all our classes (ACTP and ACSTH) and our Advanced Program coaches graduate with a 12 month FlipIt Facilitator license.  However, you don't have to be a coach to use this tool, with many individuals and workplaces integrating it into their work or life.  Read More

Performance Coach, CANADA

testimonial-avatarLearning coaching in such a professional and credible institution like ICA is an experience that will be always memorable for me! The most memorable moment was one of my mentor coaching classes where I finally found the courage to coach someone for the first time in my life. That day is still so vivid in my mind. I was shaking when I was done. The best part that put the smile on my face today is how all ICA instructors are so direct and supportive to you. They encourage you to grow and they never judge you. Thank you, ICA!

Work Life Integration Coach, UNITED STATES

testimonial-avatarThe classroom environment was always lively and full of smart classmates willing to participate. It was my anchor during the COVID-19 quarantine.

testimonial-avatarI remember the feeling you get when you realize you've made the right decision... I truly enjoyed every class in the program. Every experience I had through classes confirmed that ICA was the right choice to prepare myself for my next career as a coach. I particularly enjoyed the flexibility provided in how everyone chooses to complete the program as well as the nontraditional learning format. Minimizing lectures and book learning while favoring group discussions and self-reflection has been such a powerful way to learn and grow. I'm grateful for all of my skills instructors who made the process fun and engaging. The cultural diversity provided by instructors and students from all over the world was a great additional benefit. I highly recommend ICA!
