Research Paper: The Career Journey @ Crossroads

2013/12/24

The process and the First Session:

The coaching process was done in two sessions where the first session was exploring about what’s was happening in client life at present. This was more of exploration and client was exploring the present. During the process the questions like “What is happening in your life now?, What is bothering you? How are you feeling about it? The client stated his dilemma that he had this excellent opportunity to go abroad and for a global role but he was not sure how this shall help him in long term.

The process of Visualization was used to help client experience his future now and collect the learning’s. Out of the two options that he had, the client was asked to visualize to a time n future where he is reliving his option

  1. The client was taken in a meditative state with few deep breaths and able to concentrate for visualization. The client was asked to see what was happening around him, what are people saying about him and what was he going through. He was then asked to collect his experience and park within him. The client was brought to present state. He was then asked to visualize the scenario-
  2. and gather the feedback and reaction and experience and hold it in him. The client was brought to the present state. The client was asked to share what his learning from the two scenario and what were people was saying. Who were these people? During this process client realised the need to bring in other key people and take their feedback in his decision as it was affecting them.

The session ended with the client agreeing to talk to them and come with their feedback in the next session.

Second Session:

It started with the client sharing the discovery of their other stakeholders in his decision. The client stated that during this process he realised that how important was to involve them in his decision which he never realised before. This realisation also provided some challenge as he had multiple inputs now and was not clear on how to proceed ahead.

Now having this realisation the discussion was focussed back to the client on what is valuable to him in his life. There were discovery happened around family, meaningful work, social contribution, shared values of working people and passion for work. The client also explicitly stated his long term goal to set something of his own. What was stopping him from reaching his goal elicited the answer of financial security? This was a key discovery and required him to build a financial security for him to realise his goal.

To get his out of the present state of confusion a direction of what he actually would value was taken. This was explored by seeking what he values in his life. Some of his value discovery may help him in understanding why he does what he does?

The aspects around family, doing meaningful work, social contribution and working with people with shared values were discovered.

The next part was around realising his greatest gifts and strengths. What work that gave him maximum satisfaction and why did he do it? The learning from this realisation helped in more finely identifying what he should be doing

The technique of Appreciative Inquiry was used to aid the client in the process.
