Power Tool: Evolve Your Ecosystem

2019/09/17

James_Rosseau_Power_Tool_1171

A Coaching Power Tool Created by James Rosseau
(Executive Coach, UNITED STATES)

As relationships and the healthiness of them is a factor in how we achieve things, I developed this tool to help people gain insights into key relationships.

The tool is framed around “Evolving your Ecosystem.”   When delivering this to a client, whether in group sessions or individually, I have found that participants gain a tremendous amount of insights relative to the current state of their relationships.  More importantly, there is typically the desire to improve those relationships, moving red to amber and amber to green.

It is stressed that there is no right or wrong in terms of outcomes.  The objective is to create awareness relative to the healthiness of relationships within the workplace.

Usage Instructions

  1. Enter the top three names of the relevant people in each of the boxes.
  2. Using the legend below, apply the colour coding with those people.
  3. Using the Summary Chart
  4. Consider what has a relationship in the current state.
  5. Consider what you can do to move the relationship up to the next level.
    1. From Red to Amber
    2. From Amber to Green

LEGEND: Red – Transactional; Amber – Operationally Mature; Green – Fluid

Rating Definitions

  • Red or bold: if you have a “transactional,” typically business-only relationship that focuses on accomplishing specific objectives. For example, the relationship between you and your manager or with a supplier is often a transactional relationship. These relationships develop around your “go-to” folks, those people you can count on to get things done.
  • Amber or Italic: if you have developed an operationally mature relationship. For example, you know they have kids and you know the names of their children. These are people you meet up with every so often and speak with on a semi-regular basis. When you see your relationships developing, you put some effort into getting to know each other better.
  • Green or underlined: if you have a fluid relationship. These people are your mentors, colleagues, and close peers. You have coffee or lunch with them regularly and your conversations range from work-related issues to more personal interactions. The discussions that you have with these people are usually related to long-term plans.
