Power Tool: Fruits vs. Roots

2013/12/19

A Coaching Power Tool created by Amanda Oparah
(Relationship Coach, UNITED KINGDOM)

Our coach approach is to work with the client to trace their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors (i.e. “fruits”) through a tree of life in order to uncover the “consciously chosen” and “unconsciously learned” values (tree trunk), and any underlying limiting beliefs (roots) that the client possesses.

ParaOma aims to create a deep level of awareness of those values and beliefs that are producing the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that the client wishes to change. This is achieved through constant curiosity about the client, asking questions and affirming any self-discoveries the client makes during the coaching journey.

When the values are uncovered, the client is empowered by one or more of the following 3 choices:

  1. My behavior supports my values and I love my values.
  2. My behavior supports my values, however I choose new values and new behaviors.
  3. My behavior does not support my values and I choose to align myself with my values.

We then go a step further to empower the client to

  • celebrate the values they want to retain;
  • choose new values and beliefs
  • create a structure, through the practice of mindfulness, to support and nurture their “retained” and “chosen” values.

This further step will be completely tailored to the client and hence cannot be rigid or prescriptive.

I have a thought, a feeling or a behavior that I wish to change. Something in the way I behave and react is having a negative impact on my relationships: personal and/or professional. Now, I want to change. The people I work
with and care about have urged me to change.

Client

Coach’s tip:

“Zone in” and listen. Be completely there with the client. This is an invitation and an offer of trust to the client. Exhibit trust through power listening, powerful questions.

The client is focused on what they are feeling and may be unable to see a way out of the challenge that they are currently facing. The coach will meet the client where they are through affirmation and acknowledgement and begin a journey to help the client discover their truest self.

Along the journey, the coach will seek to help the client become more deeply aware that their feelings are linked to their thoughts and behaviors. The coach will adopt a holistic approach and help the client explore their whole person.
