Coaching Model: EMERGE

My inspiration

Not too long ago I felt stuck. Stuck, with no choice but to just carry on. I made changes, often. I was restless, moved jobs, moved organisations, moved house, moved countries even! Only to find that – after the initial ‘honeymoon’ period – life just carried on as before.

It felt as if I had swum into a net, and found myself unable to get out, no matter where I turned or how often I tried to escape.

The turning point came when I realised that the only one who is responsible for being happy is me! And that I could take active steps to be happier. I also realised that what I was looking for was inside me all along! I started to identify what I really stood for, what my values were and started figuring out how I could combine all my talents and strengths to start pursuing a (working) life that was in line with them. And yes, that led me to want to become a coach, show more of my work as a portrait artist, as well as continue my change manager role. Embracing all the facets of me, rather than just focusing on one. And no, I haven’t achieved all of this yet. But I will, and I have found such a sense of direction and contentment now that I know where I’m going!

And you know what? That net that I got stuck in? There was no net! I wasn’t stuck! Instead, there was a wide ocean with all these possibilities in front of me. And that realisation has made me feel full of bubbly energy, ready for the next steps!

My coaching niche

I am a Career and Women Empowerment Coach and support mid-career professional women in creating a meaningful working life.

My coaching influences

My coaching is informed by:

  • Emotional Intelligence - Emotional Intelligence is the measure of an individual’s abilities to recognise and manage their emotions, and the emotions of other people, both individually and in groups.
  • Positive Psychology - the study of the strengths that enable people to thrive. Positive psychology is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play.

My coaching model

I developed the EMERGE coaching model as the basis of my coaching engagements with my clients.

EMERGE stands for ‘move out of or away from something and become visible’ and ‘become apparent or prominent’. You can EMERGE out of the water or out of the fog. EMERGE can also mean to show up and be visible in your life.

So, what does the EMERGE model stand for?

  • Establish your goal
  • Manage your emotions
  • Embrace your purpose
  • take Responsibility
  • Generate your plan
  • Empower yourself

The EMERGE model in steps

Establish your goal

In this step, we’ll establish what the client wants to achieve as a result of the coaching and gain clarity which areas of her life she wants to focus on

Manage your emotions

In this stage of the coaching process, we’ll explore the client’s emotions. What is she feeling? Where is she feeling it? How can she describe her emotions? And what are they telling her? We’ll also explore what triggers her emotions and how to manage emotions.

Embrace your purpose

In this stage, we’ll explore the client’s values. What makes her tick? And how is her current situation aligning with her values? We’ll also explore strengths and how this information informs her purpose.

take Responsibility

Now that we know the client’s purpose it’s time to take responsibility. What barriers are in the way of making changes? What emotions and fears are holding her back?

Generate your plan

Client and coach work together on a plan to move forward. During this phase, the client will use her strengths and creativity to set out her next steps and start working towards the achievement of her vision.

Empower yourself

In this step, we will identify ways in how the client can keep going, how she will keep her energy up throughout this huge period of change and how she will seek the support of the people around her.
