A Coaching Model By Xiuyu Feng, Executive Coach, UNITED STATES

What Is the TGROW X 3C Coaching Model?

TGROW x 3C Xiuyu Feng Coaching ModelTGROW x 3C is a simple and effective coaching model that enables coaches to provide a structure to a coaching session, helps the client to gain alignment with their three centers of intelligence – head, heart, and body, and ultimately empowers the client to achieve their goals.

When to Use the TGROW x 3C Model?

At the start of the engagement, the coach would inquire about the client’s ultimate goal that they would like to achieve by the end of the engagement period (e.g. what kind of person they would like to become, what accomplishments they would like to achieve, what kind of life they would like to live, etc.), their values, their strengths, and their needs. Use 3C to examine their thoughts, feelings, and body sensations.

In each coaching session, the coach can leverage the TGROW model to help the client gain clarity around their current situation and their goals, facilitate the client to find options to achieve their goals and help the client to learn from the process.

However, as coaches, we not only coach the client through the situation and help them to achieve their goals, we also coach the “who” of the client (the person) and help them gain alignment within themselves and feel comfortable about taking the actions to achieve their goals. This step is necessary as it serves as a checking mechanism to help the client figure out if it’s the “true goal” that they would like to achieve. If a client doesn’t feel comfortable achieving certain things even if they are considered “rational” or “make sense”, then it is required of the coach to dig further into what the client’s real goal is.

To help the client reveal they are a true goal, throughout the session, the coach would invite the client to examine what they are thinking vs. how they are feeling vs. where their bodies are sensing their feelings, trying to explore the impact around the three centers of intelligence (3C) and help them to gain alignment within themselves.

At the end of the engagement period, the coach would help the client to re-examine the progress made so far, confirm their strengths and values, affirm their learnings, and solidify the infrastructure they have in place to help them achieve their goals going forward. Use 3C to check how they think, feel, and sense their body to see if the alignment is there.

What Are the Objectives and Typical Questions for Each Step?

*Note: Sometimes, the client just wants to “talk through something” and is not very sure about what they would like to achieve, we can ask “It sounds like you would like to use our time to talk through this issue. What would this do for you? / What might be the benefit? / What about this is important for you? / How will you know our time is well spent?”

*Note: If the client says getting to know why is the goal, ask “what if you never knew the why”? What would you need to look at then to move forward?
