Coaching Model: Rise Above Ordinary – Transformational

2014/12/16

A Coaching Model Created by Sandhya Reddy
(Leadership and Transformation Coach, INDIA)

Discover and Reinvent Yourself

Sandhya_Reddy_coaching_modelThe coaching model focuses on a coaching process and methodology that empowers the client to set continual goals for self-development and improvement no matter what those goals are, long after the conclusion of the coaching engagement.

The model describes three aspects of coaching:

  1. Coaching engagement:

The crux of the model is in creating a self-development plan for a client, for all areas of improvement that are identified at the start of the coaching engagement. The model focuses on enabling clients to understand the situation they are in, in creating a plan for self-development after a thorough assessment of the gaps and the opportunities.

The client can set continual goals for self-development long after the conclusion of the coaching engagement. He can follow the process described and achieve success in  achieving his goals.

  1. Client transition process:

For each goal set or for a situation faced, during the coaching process the client experience includes  introspection or self-discovery to understand what has caused the situation, developing a plan for improvement or to succeed in goal, stay committed to plan and achieve happiness and self-fulfilment in the end. This is repeatable process for each goal set.

  1. Coach’s transformation process:

This coaching model believes that it is possible to bring in a transformation in all clients through a self-discovery and reinvention process.

Through a process of self-discovery, the coach enables the client to understand their limiting beliefs that control their thoughts.  These thoughts are manifested in what the client thinks and says. These limiting thoughts result in behaviour and actions that are limiting in nature.  These limiting thoughts and actions are a result of the client’s limiting beliefs – a result of nature, nurture, family background, culture, society and environment.

Once the client recognizes these limiting thoughts and actions through the process of self- discovery, the coach can help the client reframe their perspective. Coach helps the client realise and learn that there is not just one correct answer or perspective, but several correct answers or perspectives, there is not just one right answer or outcome, but several possibilities or outcomes. Once the client accepts this, it is possible to help the client un-learn their learnt belief.  The coach helps the client learn or cultivate new habits, create a new mind-set that will allow them to lead an empowered life.

This brings in a transformation in the client.

The Coaching Model diagram indicate with the arrows that the Coaching process is very closely connected to the transformation within the client, and the method used by the coach to empower the client.  The arrows indicate the relationship with each phase of the coaching process and also that this is a continual cycle.  There is no end to self-awareness and self-development.

Here a list of questions that the client can answer in each phase of the coaching process.

Discovery Phase

  1. Can you explain your current situation?
  2. What has caused it?
  3. How do you feel about it?
  4. What are the reasons because of which you have got into this situation or are feeling this way?

Self-Assessment Phase

  1. How do you want to be? What is the target or ‘perfect situation”
  2. What do you want to be doing in a situation where everything is perfect?
  3. How will you feel when the target is achieved?
  4. What is the obstacle that prevents you from achieving the target?
  5. What is your belief that is fuelling your thinking and actions?
  6. How do you feel about your belief? Where did it come from?

Self-Development Phase

  1. What would you like to do in order to change the way you think?
  2. Would you like to create a plan for achieving your target?
  3. What is the new habit that you can include to achieve your target?
  4. What would you like to do differently, compared to before so that you can achieve your target?
  5. What new possibilities do you see now, that were not there before, and that will empower you to achieve your target?
  6. What kind of support will you need that will help you stay on track?
  7. What kind milestones and checks would you will like to include in your plan to ensure that you are on track to achieve your target

Review Phase

  1. How do you feel about your progress?
  2. Do you feel that you are going back to your old habits and ways of thinking once in a while?
  3. What do you do to get back on track?
  4. Are your support systems working effectively? If no, what would you like to do about it?
