Coaching Model: Lift The Mist

2017/06/30

A Coaching Model Created by Samantha Smith
(Modern Deportment Coach, UNITED STATES)

Modern Deportment Coaching Model Samantha SmithLifting The Mist is all about breaking through the emotional barriers that stand in our way. Your mist could be an underlying assumption about yourself, an idea bestowed by another, a fear, or lack of focus, a loss of self confidence, an excuse, an underestimate of your abilities, or even a city frazzled fog of lifestyle imbalance; however your mist metabolizes (and most of us seem to have some kind of mist) it can churn your goals into a cauldron of confusion and stop you achieving (or even embarking on) your goals, dreams, ambitions, and occasionally even quite mundane aspects of living a happier life.

My task with my coaching model is to Lift the Mist and introduce clarity into the cauldron – a logical plan that, in accordance with PCC Markers and ICA coach skills, can introduce a step by step model of movement through whatever the mist might be. The key for me is the magic of reframing of a perspective, for when we begin to realize that a lot of what holds us back is simply our habitual viewpoint we can become rapidly liberated, inspired, and motivated towards the change that for whatever reason before has unfairly eluded us.

The Lift the Mist Coaching Model acronym is explained below:

List it

For the Client: List Your Goals – What do you want to achieve here? What do you want to get out of this coaching experience?

ICA Coach Skills: Listening!

ICF Core Competencies: Establishing the Coaching Agreement, Establishing Trust with the Client, Coaching Presence, Active Listening.

Identify it

For the Client: What is the purpose of this goal? What is important to you about it? What is meaningful? Identify the reason, benefit, or intention that is your ultimate motivating factor here.

ICA Coach Skills – Listening! Powerful Questions.

ICF Core Competencies: Establishing the Coaching Agreement, Establishing Trust and Intimacy with the Client, Coaching Presence, Active Listening.

Focus it

For the Client: Now it’s time to get strategic, to focus this mission ahead and start planning with practicality how to move forward.

ICA Coach Skills: Defining Structures to support client outcome, Reframing Perspective that previously held client back, Visualizing the mist clearing and what that could look like, Trusting in one’s potential to do this, Intent, and the drawing from identified purpose to motivate, moving from Delay into Action, with the notion that embarking on the creative procedure of planning and strategizing the path ahead will set the process in motion, as per Edward de Bono’s ‘Operacy’.

ICF Core Competencies: Active Listening, Powerful Questioning, Creating Awareness, Planning and
Goal Setting

Take it on

For the Client: Jump right in… with the support and accountability of a coaches support previously daunting scenarios have the potential to become creative, explorative and empowering experiences.

ICA Coach Skills: Creating a space where Lightness and Significance can change places, where forward movement is Acknowledged, and Celebrated and where Self Awareness can grow.

ICF Core Competencies: Managing Progress and Accountability

Meditate it

For the Client: Meditating the moment is about allowing the space to reflect on the process to date.

ICA Coach Skills: It is an opportunity to introduce Appreciative Enquiry into the coaching process as the client identifies what has worked well so far and how this can be built on moving forward. This is supported by the concept of Reframing Perspectives as natural inclinations towards negative thinking and prioritizing problems are surpassed by increased Awareness towards proven strengths, and the subsequent energy and motivation that is achieved as a result.

ICF Core Competencies: Managing Process and Accountability

Integrate it

For the Client: Integrate your progress and your new perspective into your lifestyle.

ICA Coach Skills: Powerful Questions serve to increase client awareness of her new state of confidence and realm of possibility.

ICF Core Competencies: Creating Awareness

Shake it

For the Client: Shake the rut and Lift the Mist that held you back.

ICA Coach Skills: Reframing Perspectives.

ICF Core Competencies: Creating Awareness.

Take it

For the Client: Take it, you earned it, achieved it, succeeded and empower the way to walk right into your future with confidence.

ICA Coach Skills: Acknowledgment.

ICF Core Competencies: Creating Awareness.

Life the Mist is a coaching model designed for use over the course of a coaching relationship and can be applied to a single goal and sub-goals and challenges alike.
