Coaching Model: JAZZ

2017/11/28

A Coaching Model Created by Raluca Daniela Hritcu
(Business Coach, ROMANIA)

I name my coaching model JAZZ, as this is a style of music that I enjoy a lot whenever I am facing a diversity of emotions and circumstances:

  • Sadness – it brings a smile on my face
  • Anxiety – it helps me cool down and be in sync with my own breath/ heart beats
  • Anger – it calms me down
  • Lethargy – it energizes me
  • Boredom – it sparks new ideas
  • Stillness – it triggers action

I think good coaching is just like jazz because they share these principles

  • Improvisation: artists play with each other while performing, they continuously adapt to each other, just like a coach and a client do in a good session
  • The act of jazz is a unique artistic creation, just like every coaching conversation
  • Jazz has science behind it (you cannot act spontaneous if you don't know the science behind playing the instruments) and so does the coaching conversation (there are techniques behind the natural way a coach can conduct a coaching conversation)
  • Jazz releases energy and so does a good coaching conversation

Process:

  • The coach and the client introduce themselves, talk a bit about their current state (they do their solos)
  • The client takes the lead mentioning what is the problem and the coach plays along, introducing from time to time sudden changes of rhythm, new sounds, provoking the client to change the pace as well to keep the harmony and participate in creating a new, original artistic act (a solo of the client coincides with active listening, while a very intensive duo is like a powerful dialogue with power questions)
  • Tension is build and released until it naturally fades our toward the end of the act when the session is closed and the steps to be taken after the closure are outlined
