An integrated coaching model
In the practice of any system of Yoga, as in most other undertakings in life, defining the intention (purpose) is paramount. In moving towards a yogic lifestyle, the practitioner is on a continuous path of obtaining clarity, particularly towards the self. The P7 model is also designed to be in pursuit of this clarity. The idea is to define the whole before focusing on different aspects needed to achieve it. The concept of ‘Sankalpa’ or ‘Resolve’ is crucial here. Sankalpa is a short, positive statement with the intention of one’s life and practice. It is the answer to the question, “why are you doing this?”.
Similarly, in any coaching engagement, it is important to gain clarity regarding the overall intention (Purpose) of the client is approaching the coach. Discovering this need not be a complicated process, but one that taps into the inherent motivation of the client. Thus, the component of cultivating self-awareness is crucial.
Once this clarity is gained, the model moves the client towards specificity. Defining the goal of a particular conversation (Particulars); The current reality and the client’s mood towards this reality (Perception); The available options or pathways one can take (Process); The resources required to undertake this journey and the current access to them (Provisions); Action/s which can help the client gain momentum and (Push); Strategies that can help keep this momentum going (Progress).
It is important to note that the central component of this model is in exploring and strengthening the conviction and faith of the client in the process and ensuring progress.
This is the overarching intention that one has. It is an understanding and reiteration of the bigger picture. Having clarity of purpose is at the core of any coaching engagement. Setting an intention gives one an opportunity to turn the light on personal values, beliefs, and visions, among other things
Identification of specific outcomes within the overall purpose is the foundation of a successful conversation. This includes solidifying a coaching agreement and moving towards stated goals.
This is where one takes stock of the current reality and the persisting mood towards this and envisioned reality (purpose). This helps in showcasing the complete picture of one’s existing reality. In exploring this, one may enquire about the thought processes, motivation, emotions, and even previously taken actions.
This is the roadmap to get from Point A to B. Having clarified the outcome and perceptions of the current state of being one can easily mark a starting point and the finish line. The roadmap/s will help explore options, their implications, and the best way forward.
This is to understand what resources one has access to and what are the support structures, if any, in place. A closer look can be taken at the skills or qualities required and available to achieve the desired outcome. This can include motivation, expectations, personal weaknesses, strengths. One can further find out how to establish the required resources.
This is the action-taking part of the model, where one can discover the best way to start moving from the current reality to the specific outcome. At this stage, one can choose efficacious and effective action/s that can be taken to provide good momentum.
This is the stage to reinforce learnings, insights, and all that has been uncovered. It is an opportunity to revisit the progression of the conversation in view of the specific outcome and the overall intention. This is also an opportunity to discuss how to keep the momentum gained.
Over time this model will be finetuned into a succinct and compact format. The core components of conviction and resolve will continue to form its base. The process itself will be simplified. Currently and in the future, the model will continue to keep itself flexible to the different needs of different individuals.
