Journey – the act of going from one place to another – Oxford English Dictionary

Life is a journey and sometimes we set off without actually knowing where we are going. Along the way, we may hit hurdles or become stuck. When this happens, we can choose to remain stuck or we can work to overcome those hurdles, gain clarity, trust, and move forward.

Coaching is often referred to as a journey – a journey you travel along with your clients. Every client will follow their unique journey and the power of coaching will help the client move in the direction they are striving for.   By building and forming a trusting and caring relationship, using powerful questions, and working with clients to set the agenda, coaching will enable the client to explore, reframe, set goals, formulate action plans, and move forward.   As a coach, you join your client’s journey for a while to help them to identify a destination, build a journey planner, and support them to navigate the milestones along the way.

If we look back to where the first use of the word coach was described in the English language – “In the 1500s it was used to refer to a particular kind of carriage”. The meaning of the verb to coach was to convey a valued person from where he or she was to where he or she wanted to be (Evered and Selman, 1989). How apt is this for describing a journey?

My life journey has shown me that it is never too late to change, refocus, re-evaluate, plan, and start again.   My coaching relationship with clients will bring collaboration, flexibility, and fluidity as we embark on their journey.

The journey model will help clients to see where they may be approaching a situation going round in circles, or when they are stuck, rather than moving forward.
