Coaching Model: The 5 E’s

The Path To Goal Achievement

Synopsis

Simplicity is the essence of beauty and so is this model – it is simple, which makes it beautifully effective in its execution of helping you recognize, plan and achieve your goals.

You may have frequently come across a lot of different techniques to goal accomplishment. A few of these discuss how goal accomplishment is all about not procrastinating, being motivated, persistent, self-disciplined, etc., etc. While these tools are definitely crucial, they don’t provide you any insights as to “what” precisely are the central steps required to accomplish your goals.

Sheer perseverence and desire may take you far, but they may only take you so far without a suitable strategy to hold everything in place. You surely can’t rely on perseverence and desire alone to accomplish your goals. A smarter, more integrated approach is required instead of simply haphazardly trying different things. What is required is a holistic, single system that captures the key crucial steps for successful goal accomplishment. The 5 E’s is an undivided, holistic model that covers all that’s to be done in goal accomplishment, from beginning to end. It kicks off with envisioning your goal, to beyond your goal, where you summarise and evaluate what you’ve done and the lessons you are able to follow for the next time. It maps the cardinal steps you need to do for each goal you quest after, and guides you throughout the entire process.

With The 5 E’s, you’ll discover that it gives you the might to crack even what appeared to be the most difficult goals in the past. Goals you never believed doable will begin coming within your reach, and in a matter of time, subdued. I personally utilize this framework to accomplish my long-term goals and it has worked wonders in achieving my goals.

Don’t let the simplicity of the model fool you. While these five steps appear very easy by themselves, they’re the core of successful goal achievements, particularly for big goals where the “What” and “How” toward accomplishing them becomes subtle. That being stated, The 5 E’s isn’t a magic wand, which omits the hard work to accomplish goals. The 5 E’s isn’t a wizard, which lets you accomplish your goals without lifting a finger. At the end of the day, you still need to put in the time and energy for your goals. But with The 5 E’s, you’ll discover the goal accomplishment to be significantly simpler. Rather than success being a random, hit-or-miss event, it will become a predictable, securable outcome. You’ll begin seeing your goals come to fruition and wonder why you fought so long with them in the first place.

The 5 E’s are:

  1. Envision: Identify and truly visualize the goal

We are always very quick to ‘state’ our goals but how often do we truly ‘visualize’ our goals? To envision is to picture to oneself, and the more in detail, the better.

  1. Encapsulate: Identify and encapsulate a plan

Before you start on any ‘project’, however big or small, it is very important that you first draw a plan. While doing so, ensure you choose the best action steps. Once you know what specifically you want to achieve, the key question is: How? From improving your people skills, to improving your time management, from getting more dates to making more money…hash it all out thoroughly while you are encapsulating the plan.

  1. Execute: Implement each step effectively

With the plan in place, the next natural progression is to get moving on the plan and goal. One thing I’ve realized as a coach is the enormous difference between understanding an idea and conceptualising it and applying it correctly and consistently. Coaching provides a coach the opportunity to study how you’re implementing certain ideas and give you accurate feedback. Role-plays, practical exercises and debriefings are great tools in the coach’s toolbox for this. Thus, a coach can guide you into implementing what you’re learning effectively and can ensure that you’re shifting in the right direction, that you’re evolving not just changing.
