Coaching Model: Joie de Vivre

2012/05/31

A Coaching Model Created by Nikhil Benegal
(Executive Coach, INDIA)

Living in the Moment with Joie de Vivre!

Clients come with the intent to work on issues they feel ‘stuck’ with – where they are not making progress in, and seem to have little or no choices on how to go forward. This line of thinking and experience of little or no choice and a sense of being ‘stuck’ in a place where one wants to get out of, leaves the client feeling disempowered, maybe confused or unclear about what to do next. In any case they are left feeling some disconnect with being ‘in the zone’ where they’re putting their ‘best foot forward’ in the areas of their focus.

There’s a good case to be made for accessing ‘your best resources’ by getting into the State where one Responds in the moment in preference to Reacting from old patterns and yesterday’s solutions. Responding opens one up to all resources, within and from outside, without the burden the Past while using and evaluating the relevancy of what worked before. Reacting limits one to what’s happened before as a limited set of choices that dissipate quickly in the light of the immediate challenge, particularly if the feedback is that it’s not working….The former enables change and the latter resists its flow…

The coach partners the client essentially to facilitate the change the client truly desires and this goal is best served when the client (and indeed the coach as well) accesses and learns to stay sustainably in the state of Responding-in-the-moment…

My experience with coaching and reflection on the process has led me to believe that getting the client into a state of energy and positivity enables them to be open to exploring possibilities and willing to initiate and implement actions – the pre-requisites  for learning, improving performance or enhancing quality of life….Facing challenges, our internal demons, or those in our external environment – our Boss at Work for
example, is best served by going into it with courage and positivity.

To enable the client to live his best moment-to-moment, the coach offers a process that leads the client to explore what is his most wonderful state in the context of his needs and ambitions, how motivated he is now and can possibly be to achieve his dreams, how to tap into his abundance of resources and take action and follow through to sustaining his deeds and results.

A model based on this process, Joie de VIVRE is given below:

Joie de vivre:

a keen enjoyment of living moment to moment in my personal and professional life.

The pleasure felt when having a good time French:

joie, joy + de, of + vivre, to live, living.

In order to get the client living in the moment with JOIE DE VIVRE,

which is the most empowered and resourceful state to make progress on achieving one’s goals,

the coach invites the client to engage in the following process:

Brainstorming

Exploration of what is my BEST life, situation, shape, content and form of Goal.

How do I look, want to look like in my most wonderful avatar in the context of my Goal

Nikhil_Benegal_coaching_model5Vitality, where is the needle on the barometer of:

my feelings my energy, my motivation and inspiration vis-à-vis my doing,

what I have to do to achieve my Goal? How do I maximize it?

Nikhil_Benegal_coaching_model6Resources, how powerful, empowered, resourced do I feel?

What are the resources I’ll need to get my Goals?

Where will I find them? What do I have NOW and what do I want to get further?

What are my support systems?

Nikhil_Benegal_coaching_model7Execution, of actions and results, what do I do now, what do I ritualise?

How do I set goals, monitor progress on them and follow through to sustained actions and results?

How do I stay  sustainably connected to my enablers?

Nikhil_Benegal_coaching_model8The final criterion is the client asking himself :

In the context of my Goal, Am I living right now, in the moment with JOIE DE VIVRE?

If the answer to this is ‘Yes!’ then the client is well on his way to success and happiness!
