Coaching Model: 8 Step Model To Change For Better

2012/10/12

A Coaching Model Created by Mahesh Godbole
(Executive Coach, INDIA)

The Coaching Model describes the 8 step process starting from need to change to making it the part of life. It is more appropriate for working in coaching environment where the change needs to be accepted across a few stake holders. It can however, help in make change in an individual specially where the effect of change will be felt and is expected my others.

Coaching Model – Change

Mahesh_Godbole_coaching_model 8 Step Model To Change For BetterStep 1.. Wake UP

  • Realise time to act is “NOW”
  • Accept Change is Inevitable
  • Reduce Complacency

Here the coach will help the client or the group realize internally that there is a need to make changes.

Step 2 ..Align Resources

  • Allocate time and priority
  • Involve Stake Holders

The coach will help the client identify what will be needed in terms of resources needed. This can mean from allocating time, to getting new skills to as natural as being reminded of the project every day.

Step 3 .. Create a Vision

  • Visaulise how change will look like
  • Look at various Scenarios
  • Build steps on ladder to reach to the vision

Here the Coach will help the Client “visualize “ how the scenario look when change is implemented. How a new vision looks like, this is controlled dreaming.

Step 4 .. Communicate the vision

  • Communicate why change is happening
  • Explain what will happen as change is taking shape
  • Address any concerns

Here the coach will help the client come out and openly say that there is change that is going to take place, how it will b e and what are the likely issues that may arise as change is “work in progress”

Step 5 .. Involve Stake Holders

  • Explain change happening
  • Ask for support and help
  • Make stake holders realize and see change happening

Here the Coach will invite the client to seek out support and help of people outside the group, but those who are going to be impacted by change. This will help in bringing sense of understanding and will help in support mechanism to be in place for the Client

Step 6.. Short Term Wins

  • Build Milestones in the process
  • Acknowledge /take feedback on reaching them
  • Celebrate and appreciate

Here the Coach will help the client realize and appreciate short term wins, this is important as once the change process starts there may be temptation to go back to original space. Short term wins will help the client gain confidence of being on the right track and hope for future will be more prominent , rather than attraction of the past

Step 7 .. Continuous Improvement

  • Review make it better
  • Take in other opportunities to make it better

Here the coach will help the client to review if the outcome of the result of change can be made even better. This is actually going back to step 1, where there is a “wake up” call but in subtle way

Step 8.. Make it a habit and ingrain

  • Build change into the process
  • Let it not slip back
  • Reflect and take another change challenge

Here the coach will try and build the confidence in the client that while the milestone has been achieved, the potential is to do even better and leave the client in the frame of mind where he savors the fruits of change, but looks to reach even better potential.
