Coaching Model: The SAFE

2013/12/11

A Coaching Model Created by Kalpana Patel
(Relationship and Wellness Coaching, UNITED STATES)

Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away. Dina Craik

To me a coaching session is like a birds nest where the client is the baby bird and the coach is the parent bird who is going to assure the baby bird that the nest is the place where the baby will be absolutely “safe” and this is where the parent bird helps build the baby bird’s confidence by telling it that “you know you can fly and I don’t need to teach you how.”

SECURE

  • Go over the coaching agreement to make sure there is clarity regarding what to expect or not expect from the coaching sessions
  • Reassure you regarding the confidentiality clause and build the trust
  • Make sure that you are feeling a level of comfort before starting the session
  • Taking some deep breaths to get you to relax and feel comfortable before starting the session

AWARENESS

  • Being completely “present” in the session
  • Using power listening, powerful questions and visualization to help you see where you are and where you would like to be and how you can get there
  • Also make you aware of your strengths. Using his awareness of strengths to gain the confidence needed to help move you to the next step.

FUTURE

  • Get you to think about where do you see yourself in the future at a particular time
  • Work with you to help set smart goals so that even when the coaching sessions are over, you continue to grow
  • Get you to think about how you can keep yourself motivated to make the move towards any future goals

EMPOWER

  • Remind you once again about your strengths and celebrate your wins with you
  • Remind you how it was indeed you who took steps in order to make the session work
  • Acknowledge you for your willingness to be coached
  • Assure you that I will be willing to help if you need help in the future
  • Giving you the confidence that you are now ready to be on your own
