U – Understand yourself better

C – Clear mental blocks and barriers

C – Consider options, elaborate action plans

E – Establish commitment and accountability

SS – Set for SucceSS

Success for students coaching empowers each student through a coaching relationship to create short term, solution-focused action plans to reach their personal and educational goals creating a foundation for success in high school, college and life.Reasons for seeing a student success coach are multiple and include:

  • finding your best fit career
  • choosing majors
  • improving study skills and time management
  • confidence building
  • test taking
  • note taking
  • learning styles
  • motivation and goal setting

S – Set your goal

The coach partners with the student to help him set his goal. The student identifies what s/he wants to accomplish. The very process of setting a goal directs attention, increases the sense of purpose and enables the client to move forward, make progress and take action.

The coach also helps the student define measures of success. The goals are usually specific, measurable, attainable and have target dates. The student must explore what is meaningful or important to him about what he wants to achieve.

U – Understand yourself better

The self discovery process is very powerful for students. Increased awareness of their interests and abilities, strengths, values, personality and potential areas of growth will help them gain confidence to make decisions, take action and achieve success. In all situations, the better the students know themselves the easier it will be for them to have motivation and higher self-esteem in order to achieve their short term and long-term goals and lead fulfilling lives. Building on strengths can assist students looking at what to study at university, which career they should pursue and how to get the best from themselves and from others. The coaching process as well as some reliable psychometric assessments i.e. MBTI, Strengths finder, DISC, etc can be used depending on the student’s goal.

C – Clear mental blocks and barriers

Uncovering roadblocks, changing perspectives and replacing self limiting beliefs with empowering ones is the next important step for students to achieve their goals. Students need to identify the beliefs that are holding them back. The coach helps the student discover what needs to be addressed or resolved in order to achieve the goal. Helping a student overcome his “stuckness” is often largely a matter of seeing things from a different perspective. It is then necessary for them to discover new beliefs and behaviours that push them into action and enable them to get the results that they want.

C – Consider options and elaborate action plans

The coach partners with the student to release their creative thinking, brainstorm, explore ideas and solutions, examine different options and available resources in order to elaborate a concrete action plan. In all coaching sessions, it is important that awareness which is gained results into concrete action. The student will identify specific actions to take him towards his goal. The tasks must be in manageable steps and relevant to his goals with a precise timeline.

E – Establish commitment and accountability

In order to help students achieve their goals, the coach must invite them to make a commitment to action and be accountable for following through. In all cases the responsibility is left with the student to take action. The student explores how to sustain commitment and remain accountable. The student can look at what obstacles s/he may encounter along the way and how to overcome them, how to keep himself motivated and when/how progress will be reviewed. For many students having a coach who can hold them accountable to certain deadlines is a powerful motivator for action.

SS – Set for SucceSS

The coach helps the student take stock and celebrate milestones and achievements. The student is also guided to reflect on and learn from experiences and possible failures and strategize ways to improve. This will enable him to take himself more seriously, to gain confidence and to gain momentum to achieve the ultimate success that he desires. The student must celebrate that s/he is learning, growing and succeeding in life!!!
