Establishing a relationship of Trust is the key first step in any successful coaching relationship. In this first step through mutual interaction I try to ‘connect’ with the Client and try to understand the Client’s state of mind.
Key competencies: Active Listening, Being Present with the Client for the Client, Unconditional Acceptance, Suspending Judgment
For any coaching relationship to bear fruit expectations of Coach and Client must be aligned. In this step I explain the details of the Coaching process to the Client, often in the presence of the sponsor so that there is enough clarity about what the Client is getting in to and what the Sponsor will get in return.

In this stage I spend enough time to understand the Client’s issue and current reality. What is the Client’s intention behind employing a Coach?
Key competencies: Curiosity, Enthusiasm, Active Listening, Powerful Questioning, Openness, Non- judgmental Awareness
During the process of Learning about the Client’s issue, my constant endeavor will be to completely ‘be there’ with the Client, for the Client. This state is achieved by empathizing with the Client fully.
