A Coaching Model Created by Bala Kishore Batchu

The steps I outline in my Coaching model, CLEAR, lead the Client from a state of clutter to clarity, in a gentle and gradual manner with Client owning up the process at each stage and Coach playing the role of a facilitator.

Connect, Clarify

Learn

Empathize / Explore / Empower

Assess & Act

Review / Rethink / Rejuvenate / Rejoice

Intention behind CLEAR model

Any Executive Coaching is about empowering the Client to make the needed decisions which in turn helps the Client can move forward. But Empowering is possible only with Clarity; Clarity in turn is possible when there is no Confusion; Confusion is the result of the Clutter. So as a Coach my endeavor is to help the Client become aware of the Clutter so that he / she can work on either minimizing it or removing it completely. Clutter and Confusion are very dis-empowering, the very anti-thesis to what a Coach is trying to do. Clarity leads to Empowerment. CLEAR helps the Client to reach that Clarity.

Some of the categories of executive coaching cases most coaches deal with are: behavioral, performance, leadership, transition and high potential. Ram Ramanatha, Mentor Coach

If you look at each of the above cases listed by Ram, each one of the ‘issues’ stems from lack of clarity. To me the pre-dominant role that the Coach plays is helping the Client reach this state of clarity so that Client can make appropriate choice for himself / herself.  Some of the important techniques used by a Coach viz., Visualization, Perceptual Positioning, Wheel-of-Life-exercise, Questioning, Reciprocating, Prioritization are all done with the single most aim to provide the much needed clarity to the Client w.r.t. the issue at hand. In some of the cases listed above, this clutter may be invisible and might be blocking further ‘growth’ of the Client.

Summary of CLEAR

I would like to summarize my Coaching model as a set of four questions that I try to answer in the process of helping the Client overcome the issue.

  • What are the things my Client wants to KEEP
  • What are the things that are making my Client (or those around him) WEEP
  • What are the things that my Client wants / needs to GROW
  • What are the things that my Client wants to THROW

The steps outlined below explain the process involved in answering the above questions in little more detail.
