Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations.– Unknown

What do you notice about this diagram?

It presents a flow, a movement, a journey through life. It is not a straight road as nothing about life is straight or perfect. However, as my clients take a winding journey through life, my goal as a coach is to guide them along their path to discovery, decision, and destination.

My coaching model, the 5Es roadmap, is designed out of evidence-based coaching experience as a client, executive leader, and confidence coach for career women of color.

My coaching framework helps my clients to tap into their inner potential, identify their purpose, and navigate a path for career growth using their unique talents and gifts. With the 5E model, my clients embark on a transformational journey, discovering more about themselves and emerging in new ways they desire.

5Es RoadMap to SuccessTM Model

In each coaching session I help clients find their journey through the following process:

E– Establish where you are

In this initial step, the client comes to the session like someone setting out on a journey, seeking to overcome a barrier in their career or life. The coachee identifies where they are and the goal they are trying to achieve. This crucial step allows the coachee to gain clarity about desired objectives for the session. By asking compelling questions, the coach can help the coachee identify which goals require immediate attention and begin their journey with a clear purpose in mind! Questions at this stage may include:

  • What do you hope to have accomplished by the end of our session(s) together?
  • How would you know you have accomplished your goal by the end of this session?
  • What would the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment feel like for you?

Together, the coach and the client reach a coaching agreement on what the client believes is paramount to work on for the session.

E- Envision where you want to go

During the second stage of coaching, the coachee dives deeper into self-reflection to uncover what lies beneath their challenge and gain greater clarity surrounding the difficulty at hand. Through open-ended and meaningful questions posed by the coach, the coachee explores how other areas in life may be connected and further analyze any powerful emotions or sensations that arise during this process. The coach can help the coach think about how they’d like things to be in the future. Questions the coach can ask at this stage are:

  • Tell me more about this…with whom? Where? When?
  • Describe a perfect day in relation to your goal/obstacle.

E– Explore new options

The client has built awareness and now, using that awareness begins to develop their own answers and assess the situation through a different lens. The coach helps the client set goals and action plans through additional questions and observations. Questions may include:

  • In the past, what has worked for you? What did you learn from that?
  • What do you see as the first step to accomplishing your goal?
  • What would you do if time/money/resources weren’t an issue?
  • What could you do to change the situation?
  • What other ways could you achieve your goals?

E-Evolve by eliminating and embracing

In this next step, the client organizes their thoughts and continues the path of new discovery to move to action. At this stage, with a goal clearly in sight, the coachee continues to map out the route to success with action. Through powerful questioning, the coachee may begin to discuss not only the exact steps to be taken but also how to step up, how progress will be monitored, as well as any additional support or resources required during their journey.

Questions may include:

  • Which options do you like the most?
  • To what extent does this meet all your objectives?
  • When do you want to achieve it?
  • What obstacles might you face if you chose that option?
  • What support do you need and from whom?
  • What will you do to obtain that support and when?

E- Emerge

At this stage, the client may have experienced a shift and a feeling of being empowered and may have identified concrete action plans or steps to take to accomplish the initial goal that was set at the start of the session. The client may also realize that more work needs to be done to be unstoppable. As a coach, my role is to hold space for the client as they choose their path to emerge and partner with them to ensure they own the accountability for their next steps.

Questions at this stage may include:

  • How will you celebrate your success along the way?
  • Is there anything else you want to talk about now or are we finished?
