Coaching is often confused with consulting, mentoring, therapy or counselling. But, it's very different. Let's use the analogy of riding a bike. A consultant is likely to instruct you on where to sit, where to put your feet, when to pedal when to brake. And, then you are on your own. A Therapist might explain why it is important for your self-esteem or psyche, for you to ride the bike to be successful. A Mentor might share their experience or expertise of cycling and advises the most effective way they’ve found to ride.
But, your coach will approach this a little differently. They will ask you if you need instructions on how to ride, what style or colour of bike you might want to ride, and where you would like to go. They then run alongside you, 'checking in” to see if you’re enjoying the experience and asking how you feel about the experience and where to from here.
