My Coaching Model (R–O–Y–D–I–N)
I’ve created a coaching model that aligns with the GROW model and also maps with ICF competencies, it’s a model I personally relate to and something I can easily remember, since I don’t intend to forget my name! (ROYDIN)
for me this would be the first step where I’m trying to understand the client’s reality in terms of what the issue is and what emotions he or she is going through.
is the next logical step, which would lead to understanding what the client would like to achieve as an outcome or goal with the coaching interactions. I believe this is one of the most important aspects of the coaching process, since the conversations going forward will depend on what outcome we want to achieve. The first 2 stages (Reality & Outcome) align with the first 4 ICF competencies – Ethical Guidelines, Coaching Agreement, Establishing trust & coaching presence.
It’s important to know what the clients priorities are since it will help us understand what drives the client and how we can channelize this energy to explore options and get to the desired outcome.
There’s so much to discover while speaking to the client, this is important, as it will help us understand the clients’ state of mind and the deeper emotions. This phase also helps us discover the clients’ self-awareness. These 2 stages (Your priorities & Discovery) align with the 5th & 6th ICF competencies – Powerful questions & active listening.
This stage to a certain extent will overlap with the discovery phase since we start getting insights to various other aspects of what the underlying issues could be. This stage helps us explore possible options the client can adopt to move ahead, it also aligns with the next 3 ICF competencies – Designing Action, Creating awareness & direct communication.
Finally it’s important that we arrive at an action plan. Again a very important phase of the coaching process, at this stage the client begins to own and become accountable towards moving to the final goal. I would align this to the last 2 ICF competencies – Managing progress, Planning & goal setting.
I’d like to use this model for all my coaching interactions & improve it as I go along my coaching journey.
