Analyse
During this phase, the client identifies the actions to fill in the gap.
- Inventory of options. Supported by the curiosity of the coach, the client defines the options seen that can fill the gap.
- Identification of needed resources. The client names the resources needed for each of the potential options to be implemented. What level of energy is required for the objective? The coach observes and feels client’s energy.
- Choice. After reflecting on potential options and necessary resources, the client makes his/her choice of the solution and develops the action plan.
It is important to be mentioned that coaching is a continuous contracting activity. As the coaching process goes on, new aspects are revealed and the objective can be adjusted accordingly, thus also the action plan.
Review
- Revealing barriers. Though the action plan has been drawn up, limiting beliefs and perceived benefits of the current status-quo might still hold the client back. The existing comfort zone is a big challenge in the process of moving forward. The client reveals the benefits that make him/her hold on to the current state, and is stimulated by the coach to identify greater benefits in the desired state that are more attractive for him and can motivate him to move forward and take action.
- Adjusting behaviour. The client evaluates and visualises those changes at behavioural level that will allow the implementation of change and putting the actions into practice.
Furthermore, internal resources are tested, mobilised and integrated in order to achieve objectives. The client reassures his/her commitment and motivation to the initial objective.
If tension can be felt from the side of the client, it is a sign that the gap still exists and there are chances for resistance to be expressed. The energy of the client is a good indicator and can be used as a traffic light. Is the client really available for change or will he/she most probably show resistance in putting into practice the plan defined by himself?
Ecologize
- As part of the systemic approach of the coaching process, during this phase, the client is lead to have a view of the whole, and examines the impact of his/her choice over other fields of personal life and over his environment.
- Is client’s plan realistic? Potential conflicts and blockages are considered. How does his choice impact his relationships with others, his community, friends and family, but also his relation with himself? How can others be affected by the achievement of the objective?
- The action plan is verified, adjusted and validated.
