Coaching involves dialogue between a coach and a client with the aim of helping the client obtain a fulfilling life. This is achieved by helping the client establish what is important to them and by clarifying their values. But, is it an Art or a Science? This question that comes up a lot in our 'What is Coaching?' Classes. When people ask this question they are often asking if there is a repeatable process that works every time and gets the same result, or does Coaching rely on intuition and sensory perception.
And the answer is a bit of both.
Many coaches benefit from a structure, accountability framework and a coaching process. But it also relies on intuition and sensory perception. I guess the word we would use to describe this state of being is “mindfulness” As a coach you have to be mindful of so many things in the coaching moment. Mindful of your clients environment, of their state of being, mindful of the chatter in your own head. In fact these things are so important that we actively teach you to develop your skills in this area.
